Free Tutoring for Students

1 09 2011

Students can receive free tutoring by enrolling in Supplemental Educational Services (SES) for the 2011-2012 school year.  This free tutoring is offered by state-approved private providers for grades K-12 in reading, language arts, mathematics, and science.

On Thursday, September 1, in the Media Center at 6:30 pm, Hialeah High will be hosting an SES fair to allow parents the opportunity to meet providers, receive information about tutoring options, and complete/submit application forms.

If parents are unable to attend the SES fair, they can apply for SES in the following ways:

1. Submit to their child’s school, or Title I Administration directly, the application that was mailed to the home of all students (187,000) enrolled in SES eligible schools.

2. Apply online through the Parent Portal. Schools have been asked to have computers and staff available during the school-level Fairs to assist parents with enrollment via the Parent Portal.

3. Apply by completing the electronic application (Microsoft Outlook required) available in the NCLB website at http://nclbchoice.dadeschools.net/pdf/7000.pdf.

Becca’s Closet needs your help!

18 04 2011

Little things can make a BIG difference…

Prom Season is soon approaching and FNC’s Main Campus will be receiving, collecting, and gathering prom dresses for young high school students who otherwise would not be able to attend their proms.

FNC is happy to participate in being a drop off location collecting Prom dresses, accessories, etc. for Becca’s Closet.  They are reaching out to our students, faculty, staff, and the community to join us in this worthwhile cause.   In joint effort with Power 96, this event will take place on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at 4425 West 20th Avenue.

Becca’s Closet is a national non-profit organization that was started in loving memory of Rebecca Kirtman, a beautiful, loving, giving, and caring 16 year old South Florida high school student.  She was an honor student, cheerleader, who regretfully passed away in a tragic car accident in 2003.  Her family, friends, and even those who did not know her keep her dream of giving less fortunate girls prom dresses and accessories, and most importantly the opportunity to fulfill their dream to attend High School Prom!  Keeping her spirit alive, Becca’s Closet continues to grow, contributing and helping many young students and their communities.

You can help by going through your closets, looking for, finding, selecting, and donating a prom dress and / or accessories.  Please share this information with your friends, family, professors, classmates, coworkers, and on your online community profile.

If you know of any student who is also in need of a prom dress please let us know so that we are able to help.

Becca’s legacy and desire to help others continues. For more information on Becca’s Closet, please visit their website at http://www.beccascloset.org and Becca’s Closet Documentary by Kimberly Schwartz at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gYX_y9sWt8g
